Dear birding friends, 

as birdwatching is a relatively new and one of the fastest growing and a most popular pursuit, it attracts people of all ages around the world. There can hardly be a better place than southern Africa (Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, South Africa) to nurture an interest in birds as it supports almost 1000 bird species, which is about 10 per cent of the world's entire bird. Taking birding to new heights, Hobby-Ornithologist Stefan Rust together with BirdsConTour represents some of the ontour bird sightings and several other interesting birding aspects to showcase the fun of birding, promote citizen science, highlight conservation, indicate where to view what birds and raise awareness of southern Africa's (sometimes international) birds and their habitats.

01.03.'14  Penduka, Goreangab Dam, Windhoek, Namibia  Squacco Heron (1) In Namibia their main egg laying time is from March till June. Courtship displays include stick passing.

02.03.’14  Connie’s Restaurant, Klein Aub, Namibia  Speckled Pigeon (3) Two nestlings are in a nest under the verandah roof at Connie’s Restaurant near Klein Aub. They regularly nest on man-made structures.

03.03.'14  Namib Desert Lodge, Namibia  Dune Lark (1) The distribution area of this desert living expert is restricted to the dune sea of the Namib Desert from the Kuiseb River to the Koichab River. It is an endemic species to Namibia.

04.03.'14  Walvisbay Lagoon (RAMSAR site), Namibia  Bar-tailed Godwit (1) This is probably the record holding terrestrial bird with undertaking the longest non-stop migration, 11 600 km from Alaska to New Zealand. And still it is a quite long-living bird, the oldest ringed bird being 31 years and 4 months old. Occasionally it forages with its bill touching the mud while rapidly vibrating its lower mandible. This probably functions as an alternative to the foot-trembling.

05.03.'14  Erongo Mountains, Namibia  Lappet-faced Vulture (12) Taking into consideration that in the year 1995 86 (about 10% of the Namibian population at that time) of these endangered birds  were deliberately killed in an incident in this area, it is a treat to see 12 of these big feathered scavengers soaring.

06.03.'14  Gelukspoort Guestfarm, Namibia  Bird & Birder Friendly Award   Not only can the new born son Luka of Crissi and Frank Glöditsch enjoy a healthy and intact environment on the farm where the beautiful Gelukspoort Guestfarm is situated, but also their national and international guests. For their endeavors in establishing an intact nature, Crissi and Frank earned a two penguin-rated Bird & Birder Friendly Award from BirdsConTour. 06.03.'14  Ngatuve Vatere orphanage, Kalkfeld, Namibia  BirdsConTour for a cleaner Bird Habitat   Today the cleaning session of the BirdsConTour for a cleaner Bird Habitat project led to the Ngatuve Vatere orphanage. Together with the guests, staff of the orphanage and some children, the entrance area was cleaned.

07.03.'14  Fransfontein Mountains, Namibia  Peregrine Falcon (1) Bush encroachment seems to be of advantage to this naturally rare species in some areas.

08.03.'14  Fishers Pan, Etosha NP., Namibia  Black-necked Grebe (32) This group of 32 individuals of this uncommon to common species was feeding by diving for food. When fish is eaten, most researched stomachs contain feathers, probably to wrap the fish bones to avoid injuries by them.

09.03.'14  Seidarap Gästehaus, Namibia  Bird & Birder Friendly Award  Seven German speaking guests have been awarded with a 1 penguin-rated Bird & Birder Friendly Award for their contribution by participating on a tour led by Stefan Rust. They also participated in the cleaning session at the Ngatuve Vatere orphanage, organized by “BirdsConTour for a cleaner Bird Habitat”.

10.03.'14  Onjala Lodge, Namibia  Common House-Martin (± 300) In many parts of the western Palearctic the populations are decreasing. These birds are superb hunters of mainly flying insects but they even take caterpillars dangling from branches. Therefore they need to be respected and treated with care because thanks to these birds the valued guests will praise a lodge that they didn’t experience any mosquitoes.

11.03.'14  Carmina Burana & Africana, Onjala Lodge and N/a’an ku se, Namibia  BirdsCONTOUR (Travel gives Wings) Members of the SingAkademie Niedersachsen, who will be staging the intercultural German-Namibian project “Carmina Burana & Africana” in Windhoek and Swakopmund, Namibia, together with the Amdi!Khoen Choir from Windhoek and the Mascato Youth Choir from Swakopmund, participated on a game viewing outing, led by BirdsConTour, to the Onjala Lodge and Game Reserve and to the N/a’an ku se Wildlife Sanctuary.

13.03.'14  Carmina Burana & Africana, Sun Karros Daan Viljoen, Namibia  BirdsCONTOUR (Travel gives Wings) Impressed by the BirdsConTour excursion on the 11^th, another game viewing trip was organized. Today 54 members of the intercultural German-Namibian project “Carmina Burana & Africana”, framed by Carl Orff’s world famous work “Carmina Burana”, joined the BirdsConTour outing to Sun Karros Daan Viljoen Resort and Game Park.

14.03.'14  Carmina Burana & Africana, Windhoek, Namibia  Bird & Birder Friendly Award Not only is the Carmina Burana & Africana one of the largest choirs that has performed on Namibian stage, but it is the only choir of such a size that ever supported bird conservation in Namibia. BirdsConTour earned a proud amount of money from members that have joined two different BirdsConTour outings. A large part of this money will be used for various projects organized by BirdsConTour. In a way of saying thanks, BirdsConTour awarded participants of these outings with one penguin-rated Bird & Birder Friendly Awards:
